DJA Corp., operator of
Trevi Bowling Center in Lake Elsinore, California, has been placed into Chapter 7 bankruptcy and the property has been turned over to a federal bankruptcy trustee. The bankruptcy judge overseeing this case has prohibited DJA “’from removing any assets from the property … or transferring any such assets to any other party’”, reports Michael J. Williams for
www.pe.com. The trustee will determine if the business will remain operational and be sold or if it will go through a liquidation.
Michael Knight, the owner of the business, has indicated that any events that were booked for the entertainment complex will be allowed to take place. Knight opened the business in the mid-2000s as the
Trevi Entertainment Center, which housed bars, restaurants, bowling lanes and a game arcade, in a converted
K-Mart property.
Unfortunately, Knight encountered some legal issues including permitting issues. He also, the article states, “secretly backed a recall campaign aimed at unseating City Councilman Thomas Buckley. The recall was unsuccessful, though Buckley subsequently lost his post in the November 2010 City Council election”.
Knight’s nefarious role in this political debacle ultimately ‘led to two misdemeanor convictions on charges of criminal conspiracy and contributing funds under an illegal name”. He served a 90-day sentence as well as three years probation, the duration of which he was ordered to relinquish his political life.
DJA had previously filed a number of Chapter 11 bankruptcies, the most recent this past March. DJA averred that the owner of the land on which the entertainment center is located, Inland Pacific California, had said that they would allow Trevi an unspecified break on rent. However, the landlord contends that Knight failed to pay the rent.
Lake Elsinore officials maintain that, due to code violations and unkempt landscaping, the property in question was seen as a public nuisance; tenant and landlord were given 45 days to bring the property up to code, with a hearing scheduled for next month. Although
Inland Pacific intends to cooperate with the municipality, issues related to the Chapter 7 bankruptcy have hampered efforts.
