We have all warned our children to not talk to strangers; our parents most likely also told us “Do not speak to strangers”, but now those strangers are calling us on the phone. If you get calls from the “U.S. Treasury” threatening arrest if you don’t return the call, don’t call back; you will NOT be arrested!
According to an article in Money Magazine by Managing Editor Craig Matters, millions of these fraudulent calls are being made to U.S. citizens, seemingly from overseas offices, using the fear factor in an attempt to get naïve and often elderly people to wire money to eliminate the alleged “crime”.
Matters reports that “In the past year the Treasury inspector general for tax administration has received more than 130,000 inquiries from people who have been contacted, suggesting Steve & Co. [the scammers pseudonym] have hit up millions of folks, and not with robo-calls either. This crew is all about the personal, threatening touch. Thank the Internet, which has made it easy and cheap to talk internationally and spoof a domestic area code.”
The way to stop these frauds—or at least slow them down—tell everyone you know about this scam. And, if you get one of these calls, hang up. Then go online to www.treasury.gov/tigta and fill out the IRS impersonation scam form.
